Static caravans: a viable option?

According to the AA, around 18 million motorists took to the roads over the long Easter weekend. It was predicted as the busiest Easter for years as the extra holiday meant two four day weeks ran back to back. The hot weather also helped cause this spike in road traffic.

Most of it was holiday traffic as people packed up cars and caravans and headed for the coast of the countryside. Around two million people flew overseas, but the majority choose to holiday to home.

If you were one of the millions fighting your way through traffic jams in sweltering weather towing a caravan, you may be telling yourself ‘never again’. Trying to lug a caravan around for several hundred miles along crowded motorways, congested stop-start A roads and winding, narrow country lanes with a racer riding your tail is not exactly most people’s idea of a pleasant journey. But there is an alternative that doesn’t involve an exodus overseas.

Over the past few years, ever since the recession in fact, the domestic holiday market has been steadily growing in the UK. With the two terms ‘staycation’ and ‘glamping’ first coined by the British media, on hand to be utilised by PRs and marketing campaigns across the country, more people are enjoying a holiday in the UK.

The boost in UK holidays is not only good for the national economy and local tourist industries. It also boosts the camping industry itself, meaning greater competition that results in lower prices for the consumer. This means the cost of caravanning is now far more affordable than in used to be.

But how does this help you in your quest for a carefree drive to your campsite? Over the past year there has been a rise of 38% in static caravan sales. This increase is due to three things: demand; you as the consumer want it; supply; more caravans are available, Park Resorts for example now offer static caravans for sale at the most popular parks across the UK; price; greater competition has forced prices down, even as demand has increased.

So why a static caravan? They are bigger and better quality than tow caravans and although you don’t have the freedom to go wherever you want, you’ll always have a pitch available at parks with high quality facilities. Plus, you won’t have to navigate around tight corners and narrow roads with a huge caravan attached to your car; you can drive up to your own private static caravan door as if it was a normal holiday home.
